Why treat bruxism?
Botulinum toxin can be used as a treatment for bruxism because it helps to relax the muscles in the jaw and reduce grinding and clenching. Specifically, Botulinum toxin works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is involved in muscle contraction.
When injected into the muscles of the jaw, Botulinum toxin can help to reduce the frequency and intensity of grinding and clenching, which can alleviate the symptoms of bruxism. Botulinum toxin treatment for bruxism is typically reserved for severe cases that have not responded to other therapies, such as mouthguards or behavioral interventions.
